The train leaves at 1pm

Dean Jackson 2 min read

One of the most powerful forces in marketing is scarcity.

And one of the most abused.

Robert Cialdini taught me years ago that we’re wired to want things more when we believe they’re becoming less available.

But there’s an important distinction I’ve come to appreciate:

Real scarcity versus smuggled-in scarcity.

You see smuggled-in scarcity all the time.

“I don’t know how long I can keep this price…”

“I might take this down…”

“This offer could disappear at any time…”

Maybe.

But those are arbitrary decisions controlled by the person making the offer.

There’s no real reason you have to act now.

Real scarcity is different.

The best way I can describe it is:

The train leaves at 1 p.m.

You can get on the train.

You can decide not to get on the train.

Nobody has to pressure you or convince you.

But the one thing you can’t do is show up at 1:15 and expect the train to still be there.

But the one thing you can’t do is show up at 1:15 and expect the train to still be there.

That’s real scarcity.

There’s an actual consequence to waiting.

When we were selling properties in the ’90s, we would engineer this into the process.

Instead of having people wander through an open house whenever they wanted, we’d bring everybody together at the same time.

And we’d let them know the house was being sold Sunday night.

Not because we were pretending it might disappear.

Because a decision was actually going to be made.

That changes the psychology completely.

Without a real decision point, our natural tendency is:

“I’ll think about it.”

“I’ll come back to this.”

“Maybe later.”

And later has an amazing way of becoming never.

So here’s an interesting question to ask about whatever you’re selling:

Where is the real train leaving the station?

What is genuinely scarce?

What opportunity really does go away?

What decision actually can’t wait forever?

You don’t have to manufacture urgency.

You don’t have to scare anybody.

You just have to make the real decision point visible.

The train leaves at 1 p.m.

Whether you’re on it is entirely up to you.
