Episode 119 at a glance: Try this and see if you get more done today…. Key ideas illustrated as stick figures

Day 104 of my journals, and the idea that changed how I plan my days: yesterday creates tomorrow. What would you want on the permanent record tonight?

Good morning.

This is day 104 of going through my journals.

I've journaled almost every day for over 30 years. And looking back, one theme keeps coming up.

I spent a lot of time trying to maximize my days.

What's my ideal week? How can I get more done?

I didn't know it at the time, but I'm ADHD. We seek novelty and urgency.

What hasn't changed in all those years is that we still get 24 hours a day.

Life moves at the speed of reality. 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour... in real time.

So I'm always looking for ways to make things feel like going downstream.

My friend Dan Sullivan has just published a new book called Yesterday Creates Tomorrow.

And looking back over all these journals, I realized it's absolutely true.

Every drop of ink that made it onto one of these pages happened in real time. In the present.

When I read them, I'm not looking back 30 years. I'm right there.

And everything I have now, everything I've accomplished, is the result of the yesterdays I created.

It's simple, but it's profound.

Dan and I have a friend, Lior, who was on a trip with some other parents.

They were all talking about how to prepare their kids for the future.

When it was Lior's turn, he said, "We don't know how to prepare our kids for an uncertain future. So what we're focused on is making sure they have a better past."

That's one thing you can control.

You can make sure that when you wake up tomorrow, yesterday was a great yesterday.

When you really embrace that, you start to sense the urgency of it.

I've been calling it the permanent record.

The things that count are the things that get on the permanent record.

So when you wake up tomorrow and look back at today... what would make you happy that you got done?

Here's the trap.

When we have a future orientation, it feels like we have an abundance of time.

Time to think about the future. Plan for the future. Ruminate on the past.

But none of that goes on the permanent record.

The only time you have to get something on the record is right now. And if you don't, that moment is gone forever.

I told Dan it reminds me of an old game show called Supermarket Sweep.

You got a shopping basket and a couple of minutes to run around the grocery store. Whatever was in your basket when you crossed the line, you got to keep.

Every day is kind of like that.

All these shelves full of things you could put in your basket... on the permanent record.

But when you cross the line at the end of the day, you only keep what actually got in the basket.

The only way I have 104 daily videos out in the world is by having 104 yesterdays that included shooting one.

Now, if you were a contestant, you might plan your route.

Head straight to the steaks. Go for the highest-value things first.

Or you could let the clock run, wander into the snack aisle, and mosey through the store.

It's a whole different approach.

And it's changed how I approach my days.

I look at what I'd really like to put on the permanent record... and build scaffolding around making sure it happens.

These 30 years of journals are the result of creating a better past. Choosing to write every day.

And looking forward, I'll have 30 years of videos on the record too.

So try this.

Before the clock starts, decide what you want in your basket... and see if you get more done today.

Good morning. Welcome back. And this is now, I think, day 104 of going through my journals. I've journaled almost every day for over 30 years. And this is a series talking about all the things that I observe from looking back over 30 years of daily journaling and what is, what was happening then and what is true right now. That's been the most, that's been the most fascinating thing. One of the things that was a constant recurring theme in my journals and looking back at them is I spend a lot of time trying to maximize my days, you know, of what, what's my ideal week, what's my.

How can I. I didn't know it at the time, but being ADHD is always a. Brings challenges. You know, we seek novelty and urgency and, and those kind of things. So I look at it and that that's a real common thing. What hasn't changed, of course, over the 30 plus years is that we still get 24 hours a day. And life moves, as I like to say, at the speed of reality, which is 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hour, and it happens in real time. So we're always trying to gamify and to bring novelty and make things feel like you're going downstream. Right.

That's what I always try and do, is make things as natural as possible. And one of the great experiments that we've been doing is based on something that my friend Dan Sullivan has just published, a new book called Yesterday Creates Tomorrow. And I realized that, that that's absolutely true in looking back over all of these journals, that even though this is 30 years ago, every day that I was recording these was in the present, every drop of ink that came out of my pen and made it onto one of these pages happened in real time. And so when I read these, I'm not looking back at them and seeing or getting the sensation of it being 30 years ago, because I, when I'm reading these, I'm right there.

And I realize now that looking back, everything in my life right now, everything that I have, everything that I've accomplished has been a result of the yesterdays that I created. And it seems like semantics in some way. It's almost like gaming the system, right? To think about. It's simple, but it's profound. And this got rooted in the idea that Dan and I have a friend, Lior, who was on a trip with some other parents. They have young children and the parents were all talking about preparing their kids for the future, how, you know, give them the best shot and when it was Lior's turn, and he said something profound.

He said, well, we don't know how to prepare our kids for an uncertain future. So what we're focused on is making sure they have a better past. And I thought, man, that's pretty profound when you think about it, right? Like, that's one thing you can control, is you can make sure that when you wake up tomorrow that yesterday was a great yesterday, yesterday that you wanted in the books. And if you really embrace this idea, if you really, as I have been over the last several months in these conversations with Dan, that if you embrace this idea that yesterday creates tomorrow, that's the name of his new book, is that you start to sense the urgency of it.

I realized that if you are spending time in a future orientation, like, that's really what was happening here. As I was writing in my journals, every moment was happening in the moment, but it was all reflecting on or considering things in the future. And there's. I've been referring to it as the things that count are the things that get on the permanent record. And if you look at the end of the day, or you look at it, do you wake up tomorrow and look back at what you accomplished yesterday, which is today, what would make you happy, that you got up, that you did accomplish, that you put on the permanent record?

And I was saying that sometimes if you have a future orientation and we have a sense that. That we have this abundance of time, that we can spend time now thinking about the future or planning for the future, or ruminating on the past, but none of those things are actually on the advancing anything by being on the permanent record today. And I was saying to Dan that when you adopt this idea that the only time that you have to get something on the permanent record for it to be done is in that moment, right? It's all. It's coming right behind you. And if you don't do something in this moment, then you've lost that moment forever.

And so I've been saying to Dan that I likened it to being a contestant on. There was an old game show called Supermarket Sweep, where you could get a shopping basket and you got, you know, two minutes or whatever to run all around the grocery store, and whatever you put in your basket when you cross the line, you got to keep. And it reminded me that every day is kind of like that. We've got all these shelves of all of the possible things that we could put in our basket or on the permanent record. But when we cross the line at the end of the day, only the things that actually got in your basket do you get to keep.

And so I was thinking about that in the context of doing now 104 or whatever it is daily videos that the only way to have gotten those on the permanent record and into the world is by having 104 yesterdays that included me shooting a video like this. So I don't know, you know, there's something about the novelty and the urgency of that that can definitely change your perspective on the day. Because if you were approaching, if you were a contestant on Supermarket Sweep, you might plan out your route. You might think, I'm going to go over here to the steak section and I'm going to get all the steaks and put that in there.

And then you're going to go, where are the highest value things that you can put in your, in your basket? Or are you. The clock goes and you don't even feel like you're participating in a game you play. You kind of go and you're taking things from the snack aisle and you're moseying through randomly through the, the aisles. It's a whole different approach when you really kind of elevate the idea of this. And it's funny, you know, I. I have had like that experience of it changing the way that I approach the days by looking at and seeing what would I really like to put on the permanent record and then building scaffolding around making sure that those things happen.

So I hope that makes sense. But it. I've found it very enlightening to look back and realize that, you know, the having these 30 years of journals is really a result of creating that better yesterday, a better past of choosing to write and document all this stuff in my journals on a daily basis for the last 30 years. That's the only way that I would have this to reflect on. And I think looking forward for the next 30 years, it's going to be great to have a collection of videos on the record to having created that from my pattern of creating great yesterdays. So I hope that helps.

Let me know if that's something that that perspective can change the way that you think about things.

Every idea that I've had, every dollar that I've made over the last 30 years has gone through my brain, through my pen, onto a piece of paper in my journal before it went out into the real world. And if I can turn people onto that activity as a driver for what to do, what to think about, what to ask yourself to draw out, what the next most valuable action is for you and how to find the most profitable things that you can install in your business, I'm all for it.

So this Friday at 1pm, I'm going to do for the first time a 50 minute profit finder workshop. And you're going to join me live on Zoom. And we're going to go through a 50 minute exercise. Bring your pen, bring a notebook or piece of paper and I'm going to guide you through a thinking process that will help you identify where the lowest hanging fruit is in your business and maybe some fruit that you didn't even know was there.

But I'm going to show you where to look for it. So it's free. It's for you. It's Friday. At 1pm this Friday. Just watch.

Just go to 50minuteprofitfinder.com and I'll get you all the details and hopefully you can join us then. Friday 1:00pm.
