The life changing magic of having a “reset button”

In 1997 Dean wrote that he wanted a reset button for his life. Then he hired one: one person, one day a week, everything handled, and hours freed up.
Good morning.
We've officially jumped into journal number eight.
It's November 1997, and I'm living in a condo in Winter Haven, Florida.
A nice life is starting to shape up. But I'm ADD... and I don't do well with things that need constant maintenance.
The journal entry is dated November 16, 1997.
Under a heading called "ideas to make my life better," I'd written "personal manager."
I need someone to make my life easier. Someone in Winter Haven with a car, who can do things on short notice.
Take my car to get serviced. Go to the DMV.
And the words that came out were these: "I'd like a reset button for my life that makes sure I have exactly what I need when I need it."
So I made a list. Wouldn't it be great if I could push a reset button every week?
The condo's cleaned. The laundry's done. The fridge is stocked with the foods I want for the week.
The car's clean and full of gas. The dry cleaning is hanging in the closet.
That's what I want to give you today... the life changing magic of hiring a reset button.
A lot of entrepreneurs are busy, and they're on the cusp of getting an assistant.
But the first place they think about is the business. One full-time assistant for the business side of things.
They completely miss the super value of freeing up your personal time.
I had a lovely lady named Mandy cleaning my apartment. She'd emigrated from the UK and cleaned houses to make a living.
One day I asked her, "Would you be willing to do some other things for me? Spend all of Monday on them?"
She said it would be a nice change from just cleaning apartments. She was more than happy to do it.
So she created a great little system.
She'd come on Monday and drop my laundry at the fluff and fold.
Go to the grocery store with my list. Come back and stock the fridge.
Clean the whole condo. Take my car to the car wash and fill it up.
Then pick up the laundry and hang it in my closet.
At the end of the day on Monday, I had a completely reset environment.
Clean apartment. Dishes done. Fridge stocked. Garbage out. Car full of gas.
It was such a freeing thing.
All the things that were niggling at me, the things an ADHD brain neglects, were just handled.
Because we have a tendency to take things to the last minute.
If the gas light wasn't on, I didn't need gas. Running out of clothes is what got the laundry done.
There's nothing wrong with it, exactly. But it's frustrating... for me, and for anyone you live with.
In a way, this is an offshoot of the Strategy Circle. What do I want? Here's everything I want. How could I get those done?
And your brain finds the answer. In my case, it was Mandy.
Think about how many things you're doing that you could cheerfully give up.
I think there are at least four, five, eight hours a week of things you could hand off right off the bat.
This eventually evolved into a full-time easy button... and we'll get to that in a future journal.
For now, think about how you could put a reset button in your life.
I promise you, it will change your life.

Good morning. Okay, we are winging our way. We officially now have jumped into journal number eight. I've journaled almost every day for over 30 years now. And I'm going back one by one through these journals and we are pulling out the most important things that I've learned. Here's what I know so far basically, and this is an exciting one. So journal number eight, we're in November of 1997. I'm living in Winter Haven, Florida. I have a. You know, I have a nice life starting to shape up in Winter Haven. But I'm ADD and I tend to not have. Not do well with things that require me to constantly do maintenance on things, you know.
So here I am, I'm living in a condo in, in Winter Haven. And I realized this is what I was part of the exercise that I was doing in today's journal. This, I actually have a date on this one is November 16, 1997. Under a category of ideas to make my life better, I had put a point personal manager. And I said I need someone to make my life easier. I need someone in Winter Haven with a car and an ability to do things on short notice like take my car to get serviced or go to the DMV or all of these. I started just listing all of the things and the words that came out for me was basically I'd like a reset button for my life that makes sure I have exactly what I need when I need it.
And the concept of if I could just push a reset button every week and have what would that look like? What could I have done for me? So I made this great list of wouldn't it be great if I could push this reset button? And my condo was cleaned, my laundry was done, my fridge was stocked with all of the foods that I want for the week. My car was full of gas and clean and my dry cleaning was hanging in my. Hanging in my closet. All of the. I started thinking about all of the things that could be done by with a simple reset button.
And that what my goal is today for you is to establish the idea of. I'm calling it the life changing magic of hiring a reset button. And if you think about it, a lot of times people say, well, I'm busy, I've got a lot of stuff going on. And they're on the cusp of maybe thinking about getting an assistant. But entrepreneurs often the first place they think about is to get an assistant for their business and they often think about it that they need one full time assistant for, for the business side of things. And they completely don't realize the super value of freeing up your personal time.
And there's a real, you know, I look at this, that the idea started here and I had a lady, Mandy, who was coming, she was cleaning my apartment. Lovely lady from, from the UK. She had emigrated and, you know, she just cleaned houses for, you know, for a job just to make money. And I asked her one day, I said, you know, Mandy, would you be willing to do some other things for me? Like would you be willing to spend all of Monday or, you know, whatever however long it took on Monday doing some other things for me? And I'm cleaning my apartment, going. So I listed all of the things and she was like, oh, that would be a nice change from just cleaning apartment.
She was more than happy to do it. So she created this great little system where she would come on Monday, she would take my laundry to the fluff and fold, and she would go to the grocery store and shop from a list of all of the things that I wanted. Then she would come back, stock the fridge, and then she would clean all of, do all of the cleaning and everything that needed to be done in the condo. Then after she was done cleaning, cleaning, she, the laundry would be, would be ready. It was like an express wash and fold service that the, the laundry offered.
So she would go and pick up the laundry and put it in my closet. And that was the last of the thing. Oh, she would take my car to the car wash. She would do all of those, all of those things. And then on. At Monday, at the end of the day on Monday, I had a completely reset environment. And it was just such a freeing thing that those things were happening. I had a clean apartment, all my dishes were done, my fridge was stocked, the garbage was out, the. My car was full of gas. All the things that were niggling at me, the things that as an ADHD brain would be neglected.
Like, often, I don't know if you know anybody who's ADHD or maybe you are, but we have a tendency to take things to the, the last end. Like if I, if my gas light wasn't on, I didn't need gas. I've got gas. But it was only that trigger of the gas light coming on that would stimulate me to go and get the stuff done, or running out of clothes would stimulate me to do the laundry. It's not optimal and, you know, there's probably nothing wrong with it per se, but it's frustrating for both me and I'm sure if you're in a relationship that that can become a frustrating thing.
But it's just the way we are. And so I look at it as, you know, thinking about my thinking. And this is, in a way, an offshoot of a strategy circle of what do I want? This is all the things that I want. Well, how could I get those done? And then your brain is able to find that solution in the form of Mandy, that that could be one thing. So I think, you know, if you look at it, the amount of things that you're doing in your life that you could cheerfully give up, that you could cheerfully free yourself from, and, you know, I think that there's at least four, five, eight hours of things initially just right off the bat that you could do.
And this you'll see as we evolve this. But this eventually evolved into having a full time easy button. So stay tuned because future journals, we're going to talk about that idea, that idea too, and you don't want to miss that. But I can't encourage you enough to think about how could I incorporate a reset button in my life. I promise you, it will change your life.
Every idea that I've had, every dollar that I've made over the last 30 years has gone through my brain, through my pen, onto a piece of paper in my journal before it went out into the real world. And if I can turn people onto that activity as a driver for what to do, what to think about, what to ask yourself to draw out, what the next most valuable action is for you and how to find the most profitable things that you can install in your business, I'm all for it.
So this Friday at 1pm, I'm going to do for the first time a 50 minute profit finder workshop. And you're going to join me live on Zoom. And we're going to go through a 50 minute exercise. Bring your pen, bring a notebook or piece of paper and I'm going to guide you through a thinking process that will help you identify where the lowest hanging fruit is in your business and maybe some fruit that you didn't even know was there.
But I'm going to show you where to look for it. So it's free. It's for you. It's Friday. At 1pm this Friday. Just watch.
Just go to 50minuteprofitfinder.com and I'll get you all the details and hopefully you can join us then. Friday 1:00pm.
