I’m sure there’s a good reason why you’re an entrepreneur. If you’re anything like me, it’s probably because you like problem-solving. And conceptualizing ideas. And figuring out creative solutions to all kinds of problems. However, most entrepreneurs I get to talk to end up trapped in the mundane execution of their day-to-day tasks.
Which is a shame.
Because that’s precisely the kind of thing, they were trying to escape when they set up their own business. I mean, if you’d enjoyed pure execution and following checklists. You’d probably be working for someone else. And look, it’s completely normal if you don’t enjoy 100% of everything you think you need to be doing. It’s part of the challenge. It feels like, since it’s just you, everything depends on your performance. On you being present day in and day out.
But here’s the rub:
Because you’re an entrepreneur at heart and crave creative problem-solving, You end up starting and stopping a myriad of projects for pure entertainment. To give yourself some kind of variety. Rather than thinking about your business as a way to sustain yourself. And if you’re not careful, that becomes a trap. That’s hard to escape. The way I see it, you should strive to create a semi-entertaining business, doing only the things you’re the best at and enjoy doing.
And then, have a really entertaining life.
That’s really the whole point of having your own business: Giving yourself more time to enjoy life. So let me ask you this. If you could set yourself on autopilot and have the autopilot do those 60 or 70% of the things you think you “have” to do but don’t like to be doing. What would those activities be? Write them down. Because when your only real constraint is that there’s only one of you. The best investment you can make right now is to find somebody who can execute 70% of the work under your supervision. And free you up to do more of the 30% you enjoy doing.
Now, that would be a real leverage for you. And the very first step towards an enjoyable life ;)
