Sometimes, success comes at a cost.
You may find yourself with a successful business, but your days are packed full of work you're not excited to do. And you feel trapped trading hours for dollars. I find this to be a common problem for most billable-hour professionals: Accountants, lawyers, massage therapists, engineers...
The billable-hour model is the de facto standard for most self-employed professionals. And if that's your current model, realize that it's the lowest level of business ownership. You reach your full capacity fast, work all the time and there's no way you can scale.
However, there's a way out. But it involves changing your mindset - a lot.
What do I mean by that?
You have to "upgrade" the way you earn income. You have to create something that will generate business without considering how many hours you can bill. In other words, you must take a more proactive approach to your work rather than passively accepting any business that comes your way.
There's a great book by Robert Kiyosaki called "Cash Flow Quadrants." Its premise is that the way we earn income and cash flow can be categorized into four levels (quadrants).
We start at level one (top left) as an employee. Here, we don't know much about our income or cash flow. Then, at level two, on the bottom left, we're self-employed. Better than being an employee. However, our cash flow is still limited by how many hours we put into the business and doing the hands-on work.
What you want to aim at is the following two quadrants. The top-right, where you become the business owner. And the bottom right, where you ultimately turn into an investor.
Because here's the thing.
Suppose you want a life on your terms if you keep adding value to people and growing and evolving your business rather than just doing the same thing for the 31st year in a row. You can't afford to bill by the hour anymore.
Instead, find what's the core of what you do right now. Automate it as much as possible, find a way to involve other people to help you out, and ultimately,
build a "system" that gets results for people without involving any of YOUR time. And shift to the right-hand side of the "Cashflow Quadrants" as soon as possible.
