Everyone starts with a big vision of helping all these people in so many different ways…
And that’s the problem. Because that vision is so big and broad and non specific, it’s difficult to get things rolling...
My rule number one is to start with a single target market. (Profit Activator One.)
Narrow your focus to just one small group. And, before you even think of expanding, direct all your energy and attention to crack the code for that small group.
Have you heard of Wayfair.com, the home goods company?
See, one of the best things about Wayfair is…
Before they expanded and became Wayfair, they started out by building 270 individual, laser-focused eCommerce sites. One by one.
First, they built allbarstools.com. And all they did was focus on selling bar stools.
Once Allbarstools was working and making profit… they moved on to everygrandfatherclock.com. There, their main focus became grandfather clocks and making that division work.
Once that site started working and making money... they moved on to the next site… and then the next one… and so on.
At the end, what they ended up with was this huge conglomerate of 270 different eCommerce sites, each very profitable. And so, they decided to bundle them all up and package them as wayfair.com.
But here’s the thing…
They already had millions of customers. They already had an established business, an established infrastructure…
And when they came out as Wayfair it seemed like an overnight success.
When people look at Wayfair now, they see this huge website that sells everything and anything and they think, “Yeah, I want to sell all kinds of home goods, too…”
But that’s not how Wayfair started…
You can’t start a new venture by being everything to everyone. You’ve got to narrow your focus on one thing. Spend time and figure out your single target market… and who are the people you can help the most.
And then, focus on those people. Give everything you’ve got, invest your money, your energy and your time to crack the code for that market.
Because once you create your protocol, your scale-ready algorithm... expanding out on to other markets and conquering the world becomes a breeze ;)
