Episode 146 at a glance: Gamifying consistency: My best advice from Jerry Seinfeld. Key ideas illustrated as stick figures

Jerry Seinfeld gave the best advice on consistency. Write every day, mark an X on the calendar, and don't break the chain. Day 130 for me.

Good evening.

Not good morning.

Listen, if you want to see confused looks on people's faces, pull up to a gas station at 10:30 at night in your Tesla and park right at the pump.

Because there's light here. And I need light to record this for you.

Here's what I want to talk about. It's going to be short.

Today marks 130 days in a row of posting a video.

And there's a piece of advice from Jerry Seinfeld that was particularly on my mind today.

He's been doing his thing for 50 years.

And once he realized that comedy was really about writing. About crafting his thoughts into words he could perform.

He committed to writing every day.

And here's the advice.

Set aside the time. Do it every day. And every day that you do it, mark an X on the calendar.

Don't break the chain.

That's exactly the mindset I've been running for 130 days straight.

And here's the funny part.

Nobody's going to fine me if I skip a day.

It's not going to cost me anything. Nobody's going to miss it.

There's no boss. No deadline. No penalty.

But I feel compelled to do it anyway.

Because I want to play the game.

Can I do this a thousand days in a row?

We're going to find out.

See, that's what happens when you gamify consistency.

When you turn the thing you're trying to do into a chain you don't want to break.

The X on the calendar becomes its own reason.

You're not doing it for the reward anymore. You're doing it to keep the streak alive.

Think about anything you've been trying to be consistent at.

Exercise. Writing. Calling your people. Whatever it is.

Most of us treat it as a decision we make fresh every single day.

And deciding fresh every day is exhausting. You lose.

But make a commitment to do it every day.

Put the X on the calendar.

And then the chain does the work.

So here we are. 10:30 at night, after a long day at an event, then a flight in from Charlotte.

And I couldn't wait to get in the car and do this.

Tomorrow morning we're back to maxxing week.

We'll talk about conversion maxxing.

But tonight, we didn't break the chain.

130 days and going.

Don't break yours.

Good evening. It's not good morning. Listen, if you want to see confused looks on people's faces, pull up to a gas station at 10:30 at night in your Tesla and pull right up to the pump because there's light for us to record this video here. And this is the important thing. Here's what I want to talk about today. It's going to be short, but there's some important advice that I heard from Jerry Seinfeld, and it was particularly important today. You may not know it, but today marks 130 days in a row of posting a video on YouTube. And the advice that Jerry gave, and he's been doing this for 50 years, probably is he.

Once he realized that comedy was about writing, was about producing, was about, you know, getting his thoughts and putting them, crafting them into words that he could perform, he committed to writing every day. And he. The advice that he gave was to just set aside time, do it every day. And every day that you do it, mark an X on the calendar, and don't break the chain. And so that's exactly the mindset that I've been doing for the last 130 days of posting a video every single day. And it's funny, but when you gamify consistency, when you gamify something that you're trying to do, there's nobody.

I'm not going to get in trouble if I don't post a video on YouTube. I'm not going to get fined. It's not going to cost me anything. Nobody's going to miss it. But I'll tell you, I feel compelled to do it. I feel like I want to play the game of can I do this a thousand days in a row? We're going to find out. Stay tuned. But if you're looking to bring consistency into your life, into anything that you're trying to do, that piece of advice that Jerry has of just make a commitment to do it every day. Put an X on the calendar, and then don't block.

Don't break the chain. Just keep it going. So 130 days. Here we are, 10:30 at night after a long day of being at an event and then flying here from Charlotte. But I couldn't wait to get in the car and to do this. And then tomorrow morning, we're going to continue our series on Maxxing week, and we'll talk about lead conversion maxxing. So tune in tomorrow back to our regularly programmed schedule. But we didn't break the chain. 130 days and going.
