The Psychology of Scorecards

While people generally understand the educating part, most are a little stuck regarding its "motivating" side. Some even confuse it with hard selling or being pushy. Others end up stuck at just continuing to educate and educate and educate forever. But the reality is that motivation is a more subtle kind of force.

It moves your prospects from the passive consumption of your emails or Facebook videos to actually take action and step into your During Unit. And it feels like a natural progression to them. What I found works best for this transition to happen is a Scorecard.

Now, I didn't say "quiz" or "test." I said, "Scorecard." There's a fundamental difference between a quiz (or test) and a scorecard. A quiz feels like I'm testing your knowledge. It implies there's one correct answer to the questions. On the other hand, a scorecard feels like you're just measuring your state, where you're at right now.

In other words, a scorecard sets your baseline. It evaluates your current outcome and suggests ways to improve it later. A scorecard doesn't test your knowledge. It shows you your current outcome, and that's a big psychological difference.

Each of the eight points is one of the eight Profit Activators. You select where you currently position yourself on each one. There's no goal number, no target to set. Just an honest look at where you are right now.

That honesty is the most valuable insight you can get from your prospects. The results deliver a comprehensive picture of their true situation and opportunity, not just a score but real insight into where the biggest gaps are and what to focus on first. That's what ignites their motivation.

You can use that insight as a conversation starter. When someone sees exactly where they stand, you don't have to hard sell or be pushy. The scorecard already did the work of helping them see what needs to change.
